Salvation of souls is the supreme law in the Catholic Church. This devotional booklet is a veritable instrument in this regard. Canon Law of the Church stipulates that abundant means of salvation including authentic devotions should be made available to the people of God at approved Pilgrimage Centers otherwise known as Shrines. “The means of Salvation are to be more abundantly made available to the faithful at Shrines; by sedulous proclamation of the word God by suitable encouragement of liturgical life especially by the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and Penance, and by the fostering of approved forms of popular devotion”. (Can 1234).
Ecclesiastical authorities of the Church in Nigeria approved, at various times and levels, the Pilgrimage Center, Elele for the same supreme reason of salvation of souls. At the beginning, the Most Rev. Edmund Joseph Fitzigibbon of Port Harcourt Diocese gave the foundational approval of the Center, which revolves around devotion to Jesus the Saviour in the Holy Eucharist. In 2009, Most Rev. Alexius Makozi issued a decree establishing the Center as a Diocesan Shrine. Moreover, the perpetual decree of establishment granted to the Center on February 16, 2016, by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, gave the center and all within it a national recognition.
Part of the implication of the above mentioned ecclesiastical approvals of the Pilgrimage Center consists in the glaring fact that the Devotion to Jesus the Saviour inspires and sustains the Catholic faith in our own place and time. In the ecclesiastically recognized statutes of the Pilgrimage Center, it Stands clearly written that it all came into existence as a result of the mystical experiences of the Father Founder, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel M.P. Edeh CSSP. As a result, the Devotion to Jesus the Saviour in all its ramifications owes its own origin to the extraordinary revelations from Jesus the Saviour and the Blessed Virgin Mary to the Father Founder.
This Devotion to Jesus the Saviour booklet is a compendium of the inspirational prayers and hymns composed by Father Edeh, the Founder and Spiritual Director of the famous Pilgrimage Center, Elele. Severally, he had mystical experiences of Jesus the Saviour and the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus the Saviour, who clearly inspired him to compose the prayers and hymns which have been proven by the testimonies of pilgrims to be efficacious at nourishing their faith. Initially, Father Edeh said the prayers alone, but later many pilgrims who visit Elele discovered that they are flooded with Divine favours each time the joined him to say the prayers.
It was for the reason of nourishing the Catholic Faith through the numerous spiritual and temporal favours associated with the prayers of the devotion that made Father Edeh compile them in the form it is found here the evangelization advantage in the present form of the devotion is that it can reach many pilgrims who would want to use the prayers to spread the God News and strengthen people’s faith in God. Although it all started at the ecclesiastically approved Pilgrimage Center, Elele, Nigeria, the authentic Devotion to Jesus the Saviour is meant for the whole world that God in Jesus Christ came to save.
